Fiberglass Hybrid Tenkara Rod

A lot of people have mentioned they would love to see a good tenkara rod in fiberglass material. We have found that the best place for fiberglass in tenkara rods is the Short Tenkara Rods that need to flex more than traditional carbon fiber tenkara rods give to get a smooth cast with the short light lines. This rod is mostly high quality S-Glass material, we added some carbon fiber in the tip sections to help reduce oscillation when casting. The marriage of these 2 materials in the FoxFIRE rod is fantastic!

This is a very playful rod with even small fish and because it is mostly fiberglass it will flex all the way to the handle when needed. Fiberglass material is also highly durable when compared to carbon fiber rods, in other words they can take a bit of a beating without issues.

3 Short ZOOM Lengths in 1 Tenkara Rod

This rod will be 9.3ft in the 280 long length, 8ft in the 245 mid length, and 6.6ft in the 200 short length.

in the past, we have sold a lot of short Japanese rods that are similar to tenkara rods but they are just too stiff to get a nice cast but they were all that was available in those very short lengths. This rod will replace the need for all these short size Japanese rods we used to sell, plus it will actually cast nicely.

The Rod Name "FoxFIRE"

Since this rod is such a good fit for the Appalachian mountain range streams and creeks where there is a lot of overgrowth requiring a very short rod. We thought who else better to name this rod than the great folks in the Appalachian Tenkara Anglers group on Facebook. There was a lot of good names but ultimately FoxFIRE was the best fit. Here is the last poll where the name was voted on https://www.facebook.com/groups/appalachiantenkaraanglers/permalink/3848853975172574/

Rod Specs

We let Tom Davis of Teton Tenkara take the prototype rod for a test drive for a few days and he had a hoot! The great thing about letting Tom test drive your tenkara rods is that he gives you rod measurements that people can trust because he is a 3rd party. Read his whole review HERE >>

Here is Teton Tenkara's measurements:

  • Nested length (with tip plug): 56 cm
  • Extended lengths: 202, 245, 283.5 cm
  • Weight (washout tip plug): 79.2 g
  • CCS (common cents system): 12.5, 12, 10.5 pennies
  • RFI (Rod Flex Index): 6.3, 4.9, 3.7

Tenkara Addicts First Thoughts on the FoxFIRE

Two Color Options

We will have an olive translucent color as well as a deep blue translucent color to choose from. These seemed to be the most requested colors so we wanted to give you the option to choose which you like best.

The Problem With Most Very Short Carbon Fiber Tenkara Rods

  • Usually a brisker casting flex, not easy to cast weightless lines.
  • If they are a soft action rod, they are also usually weak and lack durability.
  • Not enjoyable to cast short lines.
  • Many lack a proper cork handle and can fatigue your casting hand.
  • Many are not even tenkara rods but fixed-line bait fishing rods re-purposed for tenkara fishing.

The FoxFIRE Hybrid Fiberglass Tenkara Rod Overcomes All Of These Problems

Superb!

Using this as my go-to rod for tight mountain streams with close proximity to trees and branches. Works well with either 5’ or 10’ lines. Casts easy, and handles small brook trout quite well.

Glass is a blast!

The FoxFire rod is what I would call my "fun rod." The zoom feature is perfect for adapting to creek size or over hanging structure. I've caught fish up to 16" and it's just a blast. I also euro nymph so I fish a lot of flies with jigged tungsten beads. I'd have to say this rod handles everything up to 3.5mm pretty well "this covers most common trout flies." If you fish a lot of 4mm or big streamers, I'd go with a Dragontail carbon rod with a stiffer action.
It's also a fun bluegill and crappie fishing rod with light 1/16oz jigs. However my favorite way to fish this rod is with dry flies. As shown in the little video clip, I was using a size 14 foam ant I tied, and it handled that 14" brown with ease. The best part is this rod makes all size fish fun, and big fish "bent to the cork" a blast! I paid full price for this rod, this is an honest unbiased review of a product I truly enjoy.
Hope this helps!
Tight lines,

For me, I used 3.0 level line, casted great, accurate. Good play on the fish.

Fantastic little rod

Been fishing with tenkara rods for more than 10 years. I fish mostly smaller watersheds many with abundant streamside vegetation. This rod works amazingly for those situations and even has the ability to land the occasional 14"+ trout. I've still got my HM 33 but since getting the FoxFire I haven't used my other small stream rod.

Great Rod for Small Streams and Creeks!

I bought this as my first Tenkara rod after watching some videos about Tenkara fishing. I come from a background of traditional fly fishing, but I often fin myself getting snagged up in trees when fishing wooded creeks. I picked up the FoxFire and I love it! I have been out with it 6 times now and have totaled 52 Sunfish, 1 Shad, and 1 Largemouth Bass (small).
Honestly this has pulled me back into my love for fishing after having many no catch days trying to throw flies and spinning reels out at large ponds. I have finally been able to target the small creeks and streams in my area without any snags.
I am hesitant to get a big one on, as I am scared it may damage the light rod. However I have landed a large 3/4th-1lb Bluegill that made me feel like I was fighting a shark.
The light rod paired with the slowness of the fiberglass offers a unique experience when pulling in any sized fish.
I highly recommend this rod! I am excited to get the camera rolling and get a video review posted to my Youtube.
