Fiberglass Hybrid Tenkara Rod

A lot of people have mentioned they would love to see a good tenkara rod in fiberglass material. We have found that the best place for fiberglass in tenkara rods is the Short Tenkara Rods that need to flex more than traditional carbon fiber tenkara rods give to get a smooth cast with the short light lines. This rod is mostly high quality S-Glass material, we added some carbon fiber in the tip sections to help reduce oscillation when casting. The marriage of these 2 materials in the FoxFIRE rod is fantastic!

This is a very playful rod with even small fish and because it is mostly fiberglass it will flex all the way to the handle when needed. Fiberglass material is also highly durable when compared to carbon fiber rods, in other words they can take a bit of a beating without issues.

3 Short ZOOM Lengths in 1 Tenkara Rod

This rod will be 9.3ft in the 280 long length, 8ft in the 245 mid length, and 6.6ft in the 200 short length.

in the past, we have sold a lot of short Japanese rods that are similar to tenkara rods but they are just too stiff to get a nice cast but they were all that was available in those very short lengths. This rod will replace the need for all these short size Japanese rods we used to sell, plus it will actually cast nicely.

The Rod Name "FoxFIRE"

Since this rod is such a good fit for the Appalachian mountain range streams and creeks where there is a lot of overgrowth requiring a very short rod. We thought who else better to name this rod than the great folks in the Appalachian Tenkara Anglers group on Facebook. There was a lot of good names but ultimately FoxFIRE was the best fit. Here is the last poll where the name was voted on

Rod Specs

We let Tom Davis of Teton Tenkara take the prototype rod for a test drive for a few days and he had a hoot! The great thing about letting Tom test drive your tenkara rods is that he gives you rod measurements that people can trust because he is a 3rd party. Read his whole review HERE >>

Here is Teton Tenkara's measurements:
  • Nested length (with tip plug): 56 cm
  • Extended lengths: 202, 245, 283.5 cm
  • Weight (washout tip plug): 79.2 g
  • CCS (common cents system): 12.5, 12, 10.5 pennies

Tenkara Addicts First Thoughts on the FoxFIRE

Two Color Options

We will have an olive translucent color as well as a deep blue translucent color to choose from. These seemed to be the most requested colors so we wanted to give you the option to choose which you like best.

The Problem With Most Very Short Carbon Fiber Tenkara Rods

  • Usually a brisker casting flex, not easy to cast weightless lines.
  • If they are a soft action rod, they are also usually weak and lack durability.
  • Not enjoyable to cast short lines.
  • Many lack a proper cork handle and can fatigue your casting hand.
  • Many are not even tenkara rods but fixed-line bait fishing rods re-purposed for tenkara fishing.
