MICRO Sour Apple Leech Fly Pattern - Fly Tying Video

MICRO Sour Apple Leech Fly Pattern - Fly Tying Video

This is a great fly that I have started using this year with lots of success, as well as a few other testers that have done very well with it. It is light enough that it casts fine on most tenkara rods, you could go a lighter bead if you are using a very soft or full flex tenkara rod. And of course it works fantastic on a regular fly rod as well.

Most micro leech patterns I see out there are black color but I have always found olive leech patterns to work much better than black so I patterned this olive micro leech after my very effective regular sized Sour Apple Leech pattern.

You can use a different color bead head but I really believe this apple color bead makes it even more effective on the fish so I highly recommend it. I am using a 3mm Slotted Tungsten Bead which I tend to prefer most of the time on this fly. You could use a smaller size (or use brass beads) if you are fishing skinny water, and on the flip side you could use a larger bead to sink much faster.

Many micro leeches use a ostrich feather for the collar of a micro leech but I like to just pull some fur fibers off the squirrel zonker strip and put that in a dubbing loop for the collar. You can still make it a dense collar but still have a little more movement to your fly. Plus, I hate working with ostrich feathers.

Fish this fly in a dead drift or slight twitches. I prefer to sink it to the level of the trout's strike zone and then give it just the slightest twitches.
